About Robert Rathbone
I am a fully-qualified, award winning and experienced photographer who has produced stunning images for a large range of clients.
For over 20 years I have worked on some of the most high-profile news stories, covered the biggest sporting tournaments, and for some of the best magazines in the business. In addition, I have a wide experience of public relations, commercial, TV and arts photography, as well as the teaching of press photography and photojournalism.
I am currently on the photographic board of the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ)........helping the next generation of photojournalists to develop their skills.
Approved as an Arts Council photographer, I have extensive experience of live theatre and TV photography, having worked for organisations such as ITV, Central TV, Carlton TV, Granada, Channel 4, BBC, The Bolshoi ballet, Derby Playhouse, Nottingham Playhouse and The Theatre by the Lake.
My commercial and PR work includes clients like the Big Lottery, The Food & Drink Forum, Mertrux, Rushcliffe Golf Club, Holdsworth Chocolates, The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, The Woodland Trust and the Honda Ron Haslam Race School.
I have also provided the photographic images for several books, the latest entitled 'The Centenary of Rushcliffe Golf Club' was published in January 2009.
After taking the National Council for the Training of Journalists press photography course at the former Stradbroke College, Sheffield (now at Norton College) in 1982/3, I completed my training at Cumbrian Newspapers, working on the Evening News & Star, Times & Star and the Whitehaven News.
I was a founding member of staff at East Midlands Picture Service based in Nottingham - which became the world-renowned EMPICS agency and is now part of the Press Association - and also worked with News Team in Birmingham, taking pictures for a wide variety of national publications for both organisations.
My own business was launched in 1988, and since then I have worked for every national newspaper, many magazines and numerous international publications.
Over the years I have covered major news stories such as the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Shannon Matthews kidnap, the Soham child murders, kidnapper & murderer Michael Samms, the Grantham Hospital 'angel of death' murders by Beverley Allitt, the snatching of new born baby Abbie Humphries, Princess Diana's funeral, the Hillsborough football disaster and the M1 air crash.
My experience in the field has led to the opportunity to pass on my skills to young photographers. I have taught on the NCTJ courses at Sheffield and to Media Studies students at the University of Derby.
I have been a member of the National Union of Journalists since the day I joined Cumbrian Newspapers. I have also won the British Press Awards Sports Photographer of the Year title and several Kodak Awards.
